So, instead of milking my (poor, over-tired, somewhat dysfunctional) thesis dry here on the blog, I decided that for my belated blog post I would address career paths and interests.
What is everyone thinking about doing with their English majors or minors? What are your most prominent interests? Will you be pursuing the Rhet/Comp track (which, by the way – encompassed much more than I ever knew)?
It seems as if these sorts of questions would have emerged earlier in the semester. Some of them have with certain people, but the professor visits are really getting me thinking (you have succeeded, Dr. Seaman). Professor Warnick in particular set something off in me that questioned whether or not my interests are really perfectly in line with certain areas of the major. My answer – for now – is “of course.” The fact alone that I get to exercise and expand upon my writing, reading, communicating and criticizing abilities more than ever in the major is convincing enough for me. I always felt at home studying writing, rhetoric and literature. It was when I took an introductory journalism class in high school that I became interested in creative nonfiction. After that, I served on the school’s newspaper staff for the 3 years I remained in high school. Depicting true-to-life events through your own lens and with your own personal flavor is just really enjoyable for me. We have the powerto keep news powerful, keep news honest, keep news fun. Here at CofC, I was worried the major wouldn’t provide enough journalistic education and experience, though, so I declared a minor in Communication this semester. Even if I don’t end up pursuing journalism, I’d love a life of writing – about anything really.
With that being said, I’d love to hear from you guys and talk about our different paths.
